Eine randomisierte, Placebo-kontrollierte Studie ermittelte mit 144 Patienten, ob medizinisches Cannabis (Wirkstoff Cannabidiol, CBD) belastende Symptome bei fortgeschrittenem Krebs besser lindert als die palliative Standardpflege. Das CBD-Öl verbesserte demnach die Symptomlinderung nicht mehr als das Placebo, war jedoch meist gut verträglich.

Eine Meta-Analyse von 3 Studien zeigte keine eindeutigen Vorteile für von Kachexie betroffene Krebspatienten durch die Einnahme von medizinischen Cannabinoiden. Die Cannabinoide verbesserten nicht in allen Studien den Appetit und schmälerten hingegen die Lebensqualität der Krebspatienten. Die verminderte Lebensqualität ließ sich vermutlich auf vermehrte unerwünschte Ereignisse, die mit der Cannabinoid-Einnahme einhergingen, zurückzuführen.
